Introducing FootNotes™ Music Notation For Tap Dance. This is a new system that utilizes music notation to write down tap steps. The focus is on precision of time and rhythm, rather than the visual aspects of tap, although body movement and traveling will be addressed at a later time. While tap dancing is a visual art form, it most certainly is also an aural one, which makes it a percussion instrument. It can be argued that the greatest tap dancers were (and are) the ones with the best "time" and "feel". |
The future of tap is written. It is my belief that the study of tap dancing can benefit greatly from, and indeed is in need of, a notation system that is globally accepted. The value of a written repertoire is obvious. It is essential for the growth and development of the artform for which it is created. Imagine where music would be today if there was no way to write it down. I also believe that with this notation, new areas of exploration and study will open up to tap dance. It is my hope, too, that this system will attract new students from the music world who will be encouraged to take up tap dance because of the ability to study it in a familiar, musical manner. |
| Check out the forums. The forums page offers an open dialogue with fellow tappers, musicians and anyone who has questions about FootNotes™ or any of the written notations, as well as tap dancing info in general. At this point, registering is not necessary to post a question or comment. |
| Coming Soon- In the works are video podcasts of the lessons of FootNotes™, as well as podcasts on ideas on how to practice, different styles, transcribing, and improvisation. Stay tuned! |
